There can be no argument that Glassco took great delight in the Squire Hardman illustrations; however, what exactly he’d intended in commissioning the work is left to speculation. Plans for a “new and larger edition,” if any, did not exist. It may have been that Glassco found the costs involved in creating an illustrated book prohibitive. Perhaps he worried that he might not be able to find a printer willing to reproduce the images. He may have come to the conclusion that including the illustrations would compromise the effectiveness of his hoax – accomplished though they were, Core’s sketches quite obviously weren’t of the time. He told Core that a manuscript deadline for another project was forcing a delay in his search for a publisher. The date he provided was a fiction.88
